"After many years of the monochrome world of graphite, in 2009 I finally set myself up with a full set of Rembrandt pastels, a whole corner of the studio permanently reserved for pastels built a huge easel on a counterweight out of old scrap timber and steel with lots of lights. I'd gathered enough knowledge of pastel materials and techniques to begin, and already had plenty of photographic compositions of subject matter I'd wanted to draw for years but just weren't suited to graphite and started my tilt into this beautiful medium.
Apart from an intense 4-day advanced pastel course with Barbara McManus at the USQ when the renowned Mcgregor school came to Hervey Bay for a summer school (which laid an excellent foundation) I have mostly dragged a lot of my established freehand graphite techniques straight over to the pastel easel with the added freedom of the "make a big mess and then fix it" school of thought shown to me (thanks Barbara), the luxury of being able to lay light over dark over and over and scratch and scruff back through layers of colour, and the pure joy of loose sketchy (compared to a needle sharp pencil) freehand drawing in full colour with 200 colours to choose from (still never enough) was open to me.
The particular thing which attracted me to it more than anything is the ability to hatch different layers of colour one over another to suggest light and colour effects and depth without having to mix colours beforehand or use washes on the work. I see a long road ahead with a lot of new work
started or planned for, I intend to follow this pervasive urge as far up this new path as possible. Winning a few pastel prizes last year and selling some work virtually as it was finished (or before in one case) has been encouraging. Time allowing, my plan is to disappear into that corner of the studio as much as possible so watch the Pastel Originals section for new work".
